The Evolution of Blackjack

May 12th, 2008

Blackjack is popular casino card game which is also sometimes referred to as 21. The precursor to Blackjack was a game called ‘Vingt-et-un’ (twenty one) which was first played in France in the early 1700s. This incarnation of the game did not offer a 3:2 bonus for a two-card 21. With the growing popularity of the online casino, many people choose to play Blackjack online.

Blackjack is a popular game – in part because it mixes elements of skill and chance, and allows for card counting strategies to be used, even when you are playing Blackjack online. Card counting involves keeping track of the cards that have already been played, and altering your bets depending on the ratio of high to low cards that remain in the deck. Counting strategies like these are easy to apply to online Blackjack.

There are many other ways to gain a legal advantage in Blackjack, including strategies which simply look at the dealer’s visible card and the total value of the player’s hand, and strategies which involve tracking a group of cards through the shuffle. The main difficulty with shuffle tracking strategies is that they require very good eyesight and a good memory. Some of these strategies are harder to apply in an online casino, but there are still ways to gain an advantage against the house when playing online Blackjack.

There are several popular variations of Blackjack, including Pontoon – which is an English variation of the game, and Spanish 21, which is a Blackjack variant that is played without a hole card. Another popular variation is ‘Vegas Style’, or ‘21 st Century’ Blackjack, which is frequently played in California, and is one of the few variants where a bust does not mean an automatic loss for the player. You can find many of these variations if you browse a casino online – the most popular varations of online Blackjack are the traditional and Vegas variants.

The Blackjack Hall of Fame was opened in 2002, with seven initial inductees. New members are added each year, and include many authors and poker strategy pioneers, such as Al Francesco – the founder of the team play concept, and Peter Griffin – a mathematician and the author of ‘The Theory of Blackjack’. Voting for the Blackjack Hall of Fame is sometimes opened to those who play Blackjack online – members of the public playing at a casino online are invited to pick their favourite Blackjack players as part of the Blackjack Hall of Fame voting process.
